WHAT IS ECZEMA?

Eczema is used as a general term for different types of dermatitis, or skin inflammation. It is considered a non-contagious skin condition, skin disorder or skin disease that varies from person to person. It can be chronic eczema (chronic dermatitis), and persist over a long period of time, or it can be acute eczema, with a rapid or immediate onset. It can be onset by regular laundry soaps, which is why many eczema sufferers are seekinghypoallergenic detergents for their laundry. Soap nuts, or soap berries, are a perfect laundry alternative to detergent.

SYMPTOMS OF ECZEMA

Eczema symptoms vary and may be characterized as: red or brownish-grey irritated or inflamed skin, rash or bumps, chronic dry skin patches that can have intense itching or burning. Some types of eczema will have patches that bleed, peel, blister, weep, ooze or have pustules or scaly plaque. Others can lead to skin lesions and become infected with recurrent staph (staphylococcal) infections or even skin discoloration or a change in skin pigmentation. Repeated scratching may cause thickened, crusty or cracked skin.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF ECZEMA

ATOPIC ECZEMA is also known as: atopic dermatitis (AD), eczematous dermatitis, neurodermitis (lichen simplex), endogenous eczema, flexural eczema, infantile eczema. It is considered the most common type of eczema and is also known as "the itch that rashes". It usually begins in childhood during infancy and typically affects the insides of the elbows, backs of the knees, and the face but can cover most of the body. It's estimated that 30 million Americans suffer from Atopic Dermatitis. It falls into a category called the "atopy triad", a term originally used to describe the allergic conditions of asthma, allergic rhinitis (hay fever or nasal allergies) and eczema.

CONTACT ECZEMA (ALERGIC OR IRRITANT)

Contact dermatitis is also known as allergic contact eczema or irritant contact eczema. It is a reaction that occurs when the skin comes in contact with certain substances, which causes skin inflammation. Irritants are the substances that cause burning, itching or redness. Common eczema irritants include: solvents, industrial chemicals, detergents, fumes, tobacco smoke, paints, chlorine bleach, acidic foods, astringents and other alcohol containing skin care products, synthetic soaps, fragrances, poison ivy, nickel and many more. Allergens are usually animal or vegetable proteins from foods, pollens, or pets. Contact dermatitis is most often seen around the parts of the body that touched the irritant or allergen.

OTHER TYPES OF DERMATITIS OR ECZEMA INCLUDE: Phototoxic dermatitis (after sunlight exposure), Dyshidrosis (aka dyshidrotic, pompholyx, vesicular palmoplantar dermatitis, housewife's eczema), Discoid eczema (nummular, exudative, microbial), Venous eczema (gravitational, stasis dermatitis, varicose), Dermatitis herpetiformis (Dugring's Disease), Neurodermatitis (lichen simplex chronicus, localized scratch dermatitis), Autoeczematization (reaction, auto sensitization), Seborrheic dermatitis (cradle cap)

What is Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a non-contagious, chronic skin condition that causes rapid skin cell reproduction resulting in dry patches of thickened, red and scaly skin. The dry flakes and skin scales are thought to result from the rapid buildup of skin cells. Psoriasis commonly affects the skin of the elbows, knees, and scalp, but in severe cases it can virtually cover the entire body.

TYPES OF PSORIASIS

Different types of psoriasis: psoriasis vulgaris (common type), guttate psoriasis (small, drop like spots), inverse psoriasis (in the folds like of the underarms, navel, and buttocks), and pustular psoriasis (liquid-filled yellowish small blisters), palmoplantar psoriasis (palms and soles).

AREAS OF BODY AFFECTED BY ECZEMA

Any region of the body may be affected by eczema, although different types of eczema triggers may be specific to certain regions of the body. Affected areas may include: head, forehead, scalp, face, cheeks, nose, earlobes, eyelids, neck, arms, forearms, elbows, hands, palms, wrists, fingers, torso, back, chest, stomach, trunk, buttocks, legs, thighs, knees, ankles, feet or joints.

WHO IS AFFECTED BY ECZEMA?

Approximately 20 percent of the population, or 1 in every 5 people, are or will be affected by some type of dermatitis or eczema throughout their lives - including infants, children and adults.

WHAT CAUSES ECZEMA? ECZEMA TRIGGERS

There are both internal and external causes and triggers of eczema. External eczema triggers are caused when you come into direct contact with a substance that has touched your skin - like poison ivy. Internal triggers can cause an extreme reaction by your immune system and the skin begins to react on a cellular level. These can include certain allergens. Please keep in mind that eczema can be triggered as a combination of internal and external triggers. For this reason, the exact causes or triggers of eczema can be complicated.

Examples of eczema triggers include: synthetic laundry detergents and soaps, clothing and jewelry, temperature and humidity, household chemicals and synthetic cleaning products, environmental and food allergens, cosmetic products, artificial fragrances and perfumes, stress, internal immune system imbalances.

WHY SHOULD YOU CUT OUT CHEMICALS?

Avoid companies that use toxic ingredients, test on animals or contribute to unnecessary pollution. In order to be your own health advocate, you must conduct your own research. Stick to certified organic ingredients when possible. AVOID: 1,4 Dioxane (carcinogen, ground water contaminant and bi-product of ethoxylation), benzene, LAS, APE, NPE, Napthas, PEG, DEA, TEA, petrochemicals (derived from petroleum), phthalates, SLS, dyes, fragrance, perfumes, chlorine bleach, optical brighteners, UV enhancers & a plethora of others. Visit www.TheDirtOnLaundry.com for more information.

PHYSICAL effects of eczema include: disfigured and blemished skin (scarred, red, discolored, bloody, flaky, scaled, oozing, inflamed skin); severe pain and discomfort of itching and burning of open wounds, sleep disturbances which can include sleepless nights and exhaustion during the days, trouble staying focused on daily tasks, getting teased from peers, stress on family and romance, lack of interest in school, work and socialization, avoidance of certain daily activities.

EMOTIONAL effects of eczema include: anger, resentment, social embarrassment, low self esteem, self conscious or horrible self image or self confidence, poor body image, mood swings, shy, shameful, fear, guilt, severe sadness, depression, frustration, hopelessness.

NATURAL, ORGANIC & HOLISTIC TREAMTENTS FOR ECZEMA

A holistic approach may be used to treat eczema naturally. Holistic medicine studies the whole person, attempting to balance the mind, body and spirit. It focuses on treating the underlying causes of the ailment, not just the symptoms. Ayurvedic Medicine (originated in India), Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and alternative practitioners (holistic physicians, chiropractors, naturopaths, herbalists, acupuncturists, homeopaths) act as a mentor in order to guide the patient into changing their lifestyle, beliefs and old habits in order to facilitate natural healing.

In order to heal eczema naturally, one wants to be able to reduce inflammation, soothe, relieve and prevent the discomfort and pain of itching and burning skin, heal blisters and bloody lesions, repair skin infections, hydrate the skin, improve skin tone and texture, promote new and healthy skin growth.

In many cases, skin inflammation is a sign of the toxins inside your body. It is necessary to detoxify your body, blood and lymphatic system in order to aid your body toward self-healing. A few examples of natural or organic eczema treatments and remedies include: juicing, green smoothies, raw diets, probiotics, digestive enzymes, raw unrefined apple cider vinegar, herbal oils (primrose and flaxseed), sea salt baths, meditation like yoga, organic eczema laundry wash, organic eczema personal care products (USDA organic eczema wash, USDA organic eczema balm or cream).

To achieve these alternative treatments for eczema, one must make a true commitment to making changes in their lifestyle. Everyone is different, but discovering what will work best for you can be a long and challenging journey. The first step to naturally relieve your eczema is having the dedication and desire to do whatever it takes to resolve your eczema issues. The promise of an eczema free life is enough of an incentive to start today!

TRADITIONAL TREATMENTS FOR ECZEMA:

There are a wide range of treatments available to treat eczema flare-ups. Conventional, modern or evidence-based medicine believes in treating the symptoms of eczema with over the counter and prescription medications like steroids, antibiotics and creams with petroleum products and mineral oils. Physicians or MD's will prescribe these eczema products with hopes to stop eczema or to relieve eczema symptoms. These traditional eczema medications can range from eczema creams, eczema ointments, eczema lotions and oral eczema antibiotics. Examples of conventional eczema products and medicines include: topical corticosteroids, hydrocortisone, Betametasone, Fluticasone, Mometasone, Fusidic acid, Mupirocin, Cortisone (sometimes misspelled as cortizone), Glucocorticosteroids (GCSs), Methylprednisolone, Hydrocortisone, Prednisone, Immunosuppressants drugs, Antihistamines, Lidex (called fluoucininone), Penicillin, Erythromycin and Flucloxacillin, Vaseline, Eucerine, Aquaphor, Aveeno.

There can be many harmful side effects to the use of these medications and steroids, particularly if the steroids are used in high potency and for long durations of time. Potential side effects and health hazards of steroids include: thinning and discoloration of the skin, easy bruising, permanent dilation of certain blood vessels, burn marks on skin, liver and kidney damage and a weakened immune system.

Using products with petroleum jelly and mineral oil prevents the skin from breathing. They create an oil barrier which suffocates your skin. This will slow down the natural self-regeneration of the skin. It is important to allow your skin to breathe naturally in order to heal eczema naturally.

WHY NATURAL AND ORGANIC LAUNDRY PRODUCTS?

Your skin, the largest organ of your body, absorbs up to 60% of what is directly applied to it - including the detergent residue from your clothes and the sheets you sleep in. The products you use on a daily basis enter into your bloodstream and add to your body burden, or the amount of chemicals present in your body. Chronic health issues and skin disorders like dermatitis, eczema or psoriasis are on the rise, and exposure to harsh laundry detergents can trigger horrible and sometimes debilitating symptoms, including extremely dry, itchy, cracked, scaly, flaking, oozing and inflamed skin and rashes. These not-so-natural products can also contribute to asthma, allergies, autism, cancer, headaches, nausea, vomiting, immune system & reproductive disorders, MCS multiple chemical sensitivities, as well as disorders with the kidney, liver, lungs & heart.

When you wear clothing washed in traditional detergents, your clothing actually wicks the moisture away from your skin - therefore causing eczema issues. Soap berries (aka soap nuts from Sapindus Mukorossi) are used for laundry and are the purest form of natural laundry saop that is available on the market.

AVOID traditional detergents (petroleum based and synthetic surfactants), stain removers, fabric softeners, dryer sheets, bleach with chlorine, dyes and fragrances. Traditional laundry products contain toxic ingredients that can be dangerous for everyone and can trigger eczema. For more information, please visit www.TheDirtOnLaundry.com

It is very important to use pure, organic and natural laundry products for everyone - especially those with eczema, psoriasis, allergies and sensitive skin. Many people are in search of safe, mild hypoallergenic laundry detergents, HE (high efficiency) hypoallergenic detergents for eczema, or natural homemade laundry soap for eczema.

DROP THE ADDICTION

There is a powerful connection between scent, memory and emotions. Companies have pulled the wool sweater over our eyes - making us believe that clean should have a certain "fresh scent". They pack their laundry detergents, stain removers, fabric softeners and dryer sheets with these toxic filled artificial fragrances. Without this emotional aroma, consumers don't believe their laundry is clean. Many become addicted to the scent, constantly craving more and more, which is why it's referred to as the "Nicotine of Laundry". Don't be a scent addict. Drop the fabric softeners and dryer sheets along with the nasty side effects of these neurostimulant irritants, hormone disrupting phthalates and CNS (central nervous system disorder) toxins. NOTE: "Free and Clear" is free of dyes and fragrances, but not necessarily free of other toxic chemicals.\

DAILY TREATMENTS FOR ECZEMA

BATHING - take warm baths, never hot.

Use products that do not contain synthetic chemicals or preservatives, dyes or artificial fragrances. Pat dry the body allowing the skin to stay a little damp before applying an organic moisturizer within 3 minutes of stepping out of shower/bath.

CLOTHING & JEWELRY- wear soft, natural fibers like cotton when possible to allow your skin to breathe naturally. Some may want to avoid nickel based jewelry and other trigger items like watch straps etc.

TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY - Avoid getting too hot or too cold. Extreme temperature and humidity lead to evaporation of water from the skin, drying it out and exacerbating the eczema problems.

LAUNDRY ROUTINE - use simple organic products vs. traditional detergents- avoiding dyes, fragrances, petroleum derived soaps like, LAS, chlorine bleach, fabric softeners and dryer sheets, 1, 4 Dioxane. Visit www.TheDirtOnLaundry.com for more information. Most detergents contain ingredients whose molecules actually wick moisture away from your skin. Remember, Free and Clear Detergents don't necessarily mean free of harsh chemicals, they are just free of dyes and artificial fragrances.

GENERAL HOUSEHOLD CLEANING PRODUCTS - Avoid those that use artificial dyes and fragrances, petroleum based detergents like SLS, SLES which produces a byproduct called 1,4 dioxane (carcinogen). Use simple products like baking soda, vinegar, castile soaps (made from vegetable oils like coconut, olive and jojoba). Skip the harsh chlorine bleach and use ones that are made with hydrogen peroxide or sodium percarbonate (solid version of hydrogen peroxide).

ENVIRONMENTAL ALLERGENS There are thousands of potential allergens that occur in nature.

Examples include: dust mites, ragweed, pet or animal dander, mold, cigarette smoke and paint fumes. Avoid as many allergens as possible, especially if you know that they trigger your eczmea flare ups

FOOD & DIET Most of our bodies are too acidic (Ph levels are abnormal) which contributes to the majority of health issues and diseases like heart disease, cancer, auto immune diseases etc. When we eat a SAD, Standard American Diet, it contributes to these health issues. Fast food, fried foods and soft drinks are over processed and full of refined sugars, low in high in animal fats, high in unhealthy fats: saturated, hydrogenated, low in fiber, high in processed foods, low in complex carbohydrates, low in plant-based foods

Elimination Diet - It is important to keep a food journal to see how your body reacts or how you feel when you eat certain foods. Many of us are allergic to foods that we eat every day. Try avoiding eggs, cow's milk, soy, nuts, acidic foods (meat, processed foods, refined sugars), wheat, dairy and gluten.

Green Smoothies - Blend a combination of organic greens like kale, spinach, cilantro and parsley with fruits like oranges and bananas into a powerful blender (Vita-Mix or Blend Tec). Drink this tasty concoction in order to increase the alkalinity in your body. There are lots of incredible recipes online.

Juicing - Juicing fresh fruit and vegetables works by providing the body with a vast array of living, vital nutrients in a form that it can easily assimilate. Juicing helps to cleanse the body of toxins and assists in its processes of repair and regeneration. Some therapies for serious illness have juicing as part of their regime because of the curative powers of proper nutrition. Raw fresh juice is an abundant source of antioxidants and enzymes which assist in the elimination of free radicals and enable the bodies metabolic processes at a cellular level.

Raw Food Diet - If you want to strengthen your immune system, reach extreme health, clearer skin, weight loss, increased energy, and reduced risk of disease, then eating raw food is the ultimate lifestyle for you! According to raw foodists, cooking denatures the enzymes that are naturally present in food. Live or whole foods like fruits and vegetable are full of enzymes - the life force of food, which helps us to digest food and absorb nutrients.

MISC - there are other sites that also suggest taking raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar, Omega 3's

PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS - Avoid products which contain: parabens, phthalates, lanolin, coal tar, alcohol, SLS Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, mineral oil, petroleum, alcohol, artificial fragrances, perfumes, dyes, make-up, propylene glycol, 1,4 dioxane, PEGS, phenoxyethanol. Look up the products that you are using to see how toxic they rate on the Environmental Working Groups Skin Deep Database. www.ewg.skindeep.com
